Improve Emotional Health

Emotions don't go away. It is best to understand how and what emotions affect us the most and master self-control to ultimately improve emotional health.

Proverbs 16:32 CSB tells us, "Patience is better than power, and controlling one's emotions, than capturing a city."

Understanding emotional health gives you insight into what influences your choices and how those influences affect your mind, body, and spirit. Understanding this value provides you with emotional intelligence and strengthens your self-control. With both benefits, manipulation, and deception don't stand a chance against you. Damage from emotional hurt limits your self-control. Strengthening your self-control prevents others from dictating your choices by using your emotions against you.

Emotional trauma is damage to the psyche after living through an extremely frightening or distressing event like a car accident or death. These events often leave behind mental scares called triggers which may make it hard to cope and function normally afterwards. Triggers are things like memories, sounds, smells, people, and objects that cause a fierce reaction of negative emotions similar to the trauma that caused them. People and other forces will try to control your thoughts and actions using trauma to recreate your past fear, anger, and anxiety responses. Self-control uses peace to guard your heart and mind, joy to contain your rage, and patience to forgive others. A person who does not seek vengeance is strong and wills unimaginable power no man can take away.

GREAT TIPS TO IMPROVE EMOTIONAL HEALTH:

Tip 1: Acknowledge Your Emotions

Ignoring or silencing your emotions are unhealthy habits.

Your feelings will either come to convict or confirm something you already know. ~Chelsea

Listen to your gut feeling and try to process the root cause of the emotion. Operating solely on your emotions can cloud your judgment and lead to destruction. This is how a breakup makes the evening news. Your emotions can bypass rational behavior if they go unchecked. We often react to our feelings leaving us with regrettable choices.

Don't react, choose to ACT. Acknowledge the triggered emotion. Counteract that negative emotion with positive energy. Examples of positive energy are praying, listening to encouraging music and motivational podcasts, and creating new works. Try and learn new things daily. This provides the need for intellectual stimulus which so many of us require.

I believe there is a euphoric feeling when you create with your hands. There is something about planting a seed and watching that first green leaf sprout. Even when I'm cooking, I enjoy adding my blend of spices and flavors creating a whole new dish.

Tip 2: Discover Your Morals

Morals govern your decision-making style and drive your choices.

Your choices are made through your perspective of right and wrong. There are some innate understandings when you are born. You innately know not to harm your family. Other lessons are learned as you continue to grow. As a child, you are taught to treat others as you treat yourself. The Bible commands you not to lie, steal, or kill. You also learn that cheaters never prosper. With these basic morals, you can make some sound choices, especially concerning life or death.

I feel like life is one big social experiment full of choices that ultimately lead to either life or death. It is not circumstantial. God has given each of us free will. We may not always get to choose what happens to us, be we do essentially get to decide how we respond afterward. Every decision, in its simplest form, is between life and death.

Deuteronomy 30:19 AMP says, "I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse; therefore you shall choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants."
